Sustainability Principles

Sustainability is defined by a community's ability to meet the environmental, economic, and social equity needs of today without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Dubuque is taking a holistic approach to making our community sustainable. Our model involves a three-part approach that looks at:

  • Environmental and Ecological Integrity
  • Economic Prosperity
  • Social and Cultural Vibrancy

Each of these pieces is important individually and
helps contribute to a sustainable community.

Dubuque 2.0 Supports Sustainable Dubuque

In 2006 and every year since, Mayor Roy Buol and the Dubuque City Council have identified becoming a more Sustainable City as one of their top priorities for our community. At the call of the Mayor and City Council a Sustainability Task Force, comprised of over 40 community representatives, gathered public input and crafted Dubuque's Sustainability model and principles, which you see above.
